Overview

PathFlowDx, an integrated digital pathology platform, harnesses the power of AI tools to unlock insights, accelerating discovery and improving patient outcomes in alignment with precision care. It features a smart, user-intuitive workflow management system for tracking, logging, and reporting digital pathology cases. PathFlowDx represents a responsive solution designed to enhance the efficiency of managing and tracking the entire digital pathology workflow

The Problem

The current design lacks a modern, user-friendly interface, with inefficient case organization and inadequate patient information presentation. The slide viewing platform is non-intuitive, time-consuming, and suffers from scattered tools and annotation overlays, significantly impacting the pathologist's efficiency in analysis

Major Issue Identified: Lack of Tool Integration and Proximity

The existing user interface demonstrates a significant flaw in tool organization, as tools are not effectively combined to perform tasks cohesively. The design overlooks the principle of proximity, hindering the seamless collaboration of tools essential for efficient task execution. This fragmentation negatively contributes to suboptimal workflow management and extended analysis times."

Severe Issue Identified: User Interface Challenge

The home screen exhibits disorganized case lists, lacking effective patient segregation, appropriate iconography, and an efficient search function. This contributes to a disoriented user experience and hinders accessibility.

User Flow Study

Existing User Flow

Group 10828.png

In my user interview session with clinical practitioner, vital insights emerged: the pathologist's understanding of a patient's medical history is pivotal before embarking on the examination process. The remarks provided by lab technicians, such as details about stains on the slides, were identified as essential pieces of information.

Recognizing the significance of this context, the redesigned user flow now facilitates a seamless review of all slides, empowering pathologists to request any necessary additional slides.

Home Page

The home page efficiently categorizes cases into 'In Progress,' 'Open,' 'Closed,' and 'All,' with a prioritized display of emergency cases. Each case is meticulously organized, showcasing relevant details such as site/organ, date, stain type, and test type.

Case details page

When selecting a case, users are directed to the detailed case information page, including slides for analysis. The interface features a chat box for accessing the patient's history or requesting additional information from the lab technician.

A live stream functionality facilitates direct communication between pathologists and lab technicians, enabling real-time image capture of slides as needed.

Slide Viewer Platform

Upon clicking on a slide, users are directed to the Slide Viewing Platform, providing pathologists with an extensive toolkit for in-depth analysis. The platform facilitates AI analysis of specific specimen regions, guided by annotations. A collaborative feature is incorporated, allowing pathologists to request a second opinion.

To enhance user experience, all tools are thoughtfully organized based on functionality, ensuring ease of use and accessibility in one consolidated location.

Key Features

Collaborate Feature

Simplified collaboration: Pathologists can effortlessly enter the email of fellow practitioners, initiating a seamless meeting mode with screen-sharing capabilities for real-time collaborative analysis on the Slide Viewing Platform.

AI Analysis workflow

Pathologists initiate AI analysis, selecting a tool and region. The system prompts to review previous analyses or proceed. Within 30-60 seconds, a detailed report emerges. Simultaneously, a CTA is presented, enabling users to quickly return to the case list for additional analysis on another case.

Impact after redesign

  • Usability testing with healthcare practitioners revealed a 30% increase in system usability.

  • The introduction of a collaborative feature empowered pathologists to seek second opinions, resulting in a 15% increase in report accuracy.

  • Ensured the system's compliance with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards.
